I'm quite active on many avatar sites. I've been a member of Gaia Online since July 2004 and active ever since. One because I've made some deep friendships that branch out far from the site, and I met my husband on that site. We were married in August of 2007 even though we lived in different countries.
I'm also a member of two other avatar sites Menewsha.com and Kinsaki.com. Both pretty new too the scene. What keeps me coming back there is seeing how the site will grow and develop and become different then the others.
Because I am an artist I have done many commissions through these sites to gain money to use within the site and get items that are rare.
If I wasn't an artist I don't know if I would have gotten into avatar sites as easily but I can't seem to give them up. You just want to come back and see what's new all the time.
As for other people these sites offer fun games that you know you'll also be gaining money to use on the site too. So why would you play other online games when these ones give you something?
It's fun to learn or practice other languages on these sites. I practice my French on Gaia through different guilds and forums. Even just discussing other countries and what are different between your own to someone else's.
Also, I know many people find it comforting to be able to post their personal problems online and hearing what others advice is. Also most like therapy. That's never really been my thing but sometimes I've helped someone if I could think of something helpful to say.
I think those are some of the real vantage points. I hope that might help or whatever your wanting these responses for n_n

Mostly I've only ever been on Gaia, but my answer would probably be the same, anyway.

I focus mainly on the clothing/wearable items. It's a goal to work towards, and the better the clothing/items you have, the more status amongst your peers you gain. Especially if its known that you worked hard to get the gold to afford those items. That earns you respect. Besides, customizing your avatar to fit how you see yourself it important, because other people will see that avatar and associate it with you. First impressions, and all that.

But yeah, that's mainly what I do. Get gold and buy clothes/wearable items.

I get bored with these sites, if I dont have some friends on atleast for an hour with me lol. But I like them because its mainly a time killer for when Im bored, plus I play things like RO, but I like the battling and leveling up, but I mainly try to get the clothes I also like the classes in the games, they all look so cool I never know what ones to pick lol

The only reason I joined Gaia was so that I could have the little avatar to dress up XD
Lots of different options, lots of outfits you could put together... it's like having a poseable paper doll!

I'm gonna be really pissed off if the apocalypse really does happen in 2012.

One thing I like about sites like that is the way you can make how you want your Avi to look like(hair, size, expressions, etc.) and still the clothes that are there for grabs is always cool too which ties into the how you'd want your Avi to look.

Doing other stuff on the sites are fun too and all, but I always like upgrading style.

I seperated this into two parts.

If you want just to dress your avatar up or stuff like that only, then go to a online genorator like tektek.org.

If you want do the same thing as the first plus playing games with other members, explore the inworld they have there, and chat to real people, then go to Gaia or another sites like Gaia.
